A Smooth Connection is the link between two bodies which are fastened together at their common boundary, and will behave approximately as if their interface was soft. Since bodies can be meshed independently, the Smooth Connection is designed to handle incompatible meshes. The Smooth Connection relations take approximately into account the elastic deformability of the interfaces. The approximation is based on a least squares fit of a slave node degree of freedom rigidly linked to the master nodes (element shape functions are ignored). The program proceeds as follows:
